Invest in good quality equipment
The equipment you choose for the job is important not just for efficient cleaning but also for better quality results. While there is some specialized equipment you will need to invest in, you will most likely find many of the general supplies in your home. The basic equipment you need for cleaning windows includes:
Bucket – use a bucket that is large enough to fit your squeegee or mop.
Squeegee – purchase a high quality squeegee for the best results. It should have a handle, rubber and channel.
Mop – go for one with a t-bar and sleeve. You can easily detach the sleeve when it is dirty and pop it in the washing machine for cleaning.
Scraper – this is useful for getting those tough marks off window panes. Be careful when using a scraper to avoid damaging the window glass.
Rags
Poles
Detergent or cleaning solution – We recommend using a detergent that suds up. This will show dirty areas that require more attention. Detergents are also great at lifting dirt and grime.
How to Clean Your Windows
Now that you are equipped, you can proceed to cleaning windows. Here’s how to do it right and get great results.
Use cold water
Avoid using hot water on your windows. Hot water will evaporate too quickly. This will leave your windows stained. Fill your bucket with cold water instead. Use only a few squirts of detergent in your water. Too much soap will make it harder to clean the windows and may also result in staining.
Apply proper cleaning techniques with scrapers
Use a mop to apply the cleaning solution to the window. Take the time to rub the solution onto the window and ensure that it lifts the dirt. You can use your scraper to scrape off stubborn marks. You should use the right cleaning technique with the scraper to avoid damaging your windows. The blade should be passed in a forward direction. Scraping backwards will only result in damage to the glass as the scraper has a metal blade. A scraper is ideal for concrete window cleaning and getting rid of other stubborn stains.
Find the right balance with your squeegee
Many people don’t use their squeegees correctly. Correct squeegee use is something many window cleaning experts develop with experience.
Hold the squeegee with the handle at 45 degrees from the glass. It is important not to use too much pressure as this will dry out the window too quickly resulting in marks and stains. It will also be too difficult to move around and you may end up damaging the glass. If you pull too lightly, the squeegee won’t collect water. Try to find a balance between the two and maintain constant pressure throughout. With some practice, you will be able to squeegee the windows and get rid of water without leaving stains behind.
Work in those edges
Clean the water off the glass by pulling the squeegee from top to bottom. Be sure to get the squeegee right up to the edges of the window. Failure to do this will result in water droplets staining your windows when you’re done. However, you will still not be able to get all the water out from the edges of the window. This is where those rags come in handy. Use a rag to wipe down the edges and absorb as much water as possible. You can also use the rags to wipe down water that has been spilled onto the floor or window sill.
Use microfiber cloths to clean any other marks
Inspect the window after cleaning. If you notice any marks, use a microfiber cloth to rub off the marks. You can dampen a corner of the cloth in a cleaning solution and rub this on the mark. If this does not help to get rid of the mark, you may have to repeat the cleaning process in order to get rid of the marks. This is especially the case for large or easily noticeable marks.
